Schuurmans

Dr. Carol Schuurmans is a Senior Scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute, William Dixon Chair in Ophthalmology Research, and Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto, internationally recognized for her work on the molecular control of neurogenesis. Her research focuses on how neurons are generated during development and how these programs can be harnessed to induce neurogenesis in the adult brain and retina. She has particular expertise in reprogramming glial cells, including the rational design and optimization of proneural transcription factors that have been engineered to drive efficient astrocyte-to-neuron conversion. This expertise is central to the scientific goals of SATAra Therapeutics, where her work underpins the development of transcription factor–based regenerative therapies aimed at enabling in situ neuronal repair for neurological diseases.
